STAYING IN ONE LANE HAS NEVER REALLY SUITED ME.
Part of being a communication designer, honestly, is just trying to figure out what to call my own practice, because it spans illustration, film, print, and a bunch of things that still don't have a proper name.
Underneath all of that though, I believe design shouldn't be neutral, and at some point I stopped pretending mine should be either. I like work that picks a fight, or at least takes up its own space, and doesn't apologise for it.
A lot of that comes from what I read outside of design as much as what I make inside it. I spend an insane amount of my free time on art history and political theory, and political design is, hands down, my favourite genre- to make and to obsess over, because it's so much more than just decoration. If a piece of design makes someone a little uncomfortable on the way to making them think, I've usually done my job right.
